Kyle’s Journey in Armenia

Just Another Peace Corps Blog

  • Kyle? In Armenia?

My name is Kyle, and I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Noyemberyan, Armenia. I lived here from 2006-2008, and worked as an Information Technology volunteer for the US Peace Corps. In addition to my primary assignment developing my region's WiFi internet, I also taught computer and English classes to area youth. Thank you for visiting!

This blog remains available for historical purposes, but is no longer actively maintained.

The big city

Howdy! I hope everyone is doing well at home, and for Truman folks, I hope you had a great time at Greek Reunion. Things are going very well here, with a lot of the usual goings on. We were able to go to Yerevan, the capital city, on Monday, and it was very interesting. It’s very “European”, in that people dress far more liberally, the hold hands (gasp!) and have non-Armenian food. I don’t think I’ve ever binged that heavily on Thai food before in my life, esp. food not made by a Thai. Brings back fond memories of the STL and our coconut shrimps…

Otherwise we just took a look at Peace Corps’ main office and visited an IT cooperative in town. They work a lot more with bigger businesses in the capital, like Lycos, whereas I’ll be with the locals in the city. They are planning some projects like translating FireFox and OpenOffice into Armenian though, which is kind of cool!

We will be visiting our host sites and new host families from next Wed through Sat, so that will be great to see where I’ll be for the next two years. I’m definetly in an interesting area, and it will be both scary and fun to be so close to a closed border! Appearently I can come pretty close with a short hike, so look for those seedy “look I’m over the border, now run!” pictures soon. Hadgoh!

Hey Kyle, I am glad things are going well, except for the mp3/flash drive. A care package will be on its way soon, wink wink, after I get my paycheck and a little something else, however you will not get anything special.

The working mans life is ok for now. Living by myself in KC. Um.. really really bored but hey i checked out books that might help with that. Well I am off, Iooking forward to another great post.

Kyle…I googled Bazum and your journey comes up first or second. When I realized the dates, and Philly then Vienna then Vanadzor… it sounded familiar! Turns out you are in Training with my sister, Kathy. It sounds like both she and you are having a blast in training and enjoying your “families”, teachers, etc. I have shared a link to your site with Kathy’s kids since we have not seen any Bazum or Vanadzor photos from her yet. She did admit that you have already saved her at least once with Techie stuff. Hooray! Thanks for sharing your adventure!
